Rice-wheat cropping systems of the Indo-Gangetic Plains (IGP) though look simple but are difficult to manage on a sustainable basis due to complex rice ecologies and contrasting edaphic requirement of this cropping system. Sustainability dimensions of this cropping system importantly include inefficient use of water, declining water tables, nutrient mining and natural resource fatigue. Rice generally grown as puddled transplanted crop, is a major consumer of irrigation and lead to decline in water table, deteriorates soil structure, and increases the costs of cultivation.
