Success Story of Shamser B. Rana

Shamsher B. Rana is a laborious and innovative farmer of Mudiyari village of Gangiliya Village Development Committee (VDC) in Rupandehi district, Nepal. When National Wheat Research Programme (NWRP) consulted Mr. Rana and the other farmers of Mudiyari village before the wheat growing season of 2006, they found that about 40 ha area of that village have been remained fallow during winter season after the harvest of rice due to excessive soil moisture during planting of wheat. Then Scientists and Technicians of NWRP selected Mudiari village to launch activities for ADB supported project “ Enhancing farmers’ income and livelihood through Integrated Crop Management (ICM) and Resource Management in Rice-Wheat System in South Asia” through IRRI. With the help of Mr. Rana, Scientists and technicians of Bhairahawa organized a Meeting with these farmers just before planting of wheat to initiate Zero Tillage wheat planting in this area. Farmers in this area had no experience to grow wheat with the help of Zero Till Drill. Some of the farmers were reluctant to plant wheat and they did not believe that in excess moisture condition, how wheat can be cultivated with Zero Till Drill? But Mr. Rana convienced the Farmers’ Group of his area that in case, the wheat crop failed to grow with Zero Till machine, he would give them the compensation of the crop..............
