The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (known by its Spanish acronym, CIMMYT) works with international and national partners, farmers, NGOs and others in developing countries to improve the productivity of maize and wheat based farming systems- two crops that provide about 25% of all food calories consumed in poor countries. CIMMYT has its headquarters in Mexico and has 20 regional offices located throughout the developing world. CIMMYT is one of the sixteen Future Harvest Centres of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) (http://www.cgiar.org). Future Harvest Centres work in more than 100 countries to mobilise cutting-edge science to reduce hunger and poverty, improve human nutrition and health, and protect the environment. CIMMYT-India, an outreach office also hosts the Rice-Wheat Consortium for the Indo-Gangetic Plains an ecoregional initiative of the CGIAR in South Asia, and convened by CIMMYT.
