For programs, activities, or interests worldwide that involve IPM and/or crop pest management of insects, weeds, pathogens, nematodes, and vertebrates, where access to a unique, free, non-commercial source of current IPM and pest management global information (with e-mail contacts and websites) would be helpful, IPMnet (described below) could be both informative, and useful.

IPMnet is a free, non-commercial, internet-based IPM and crop pest management global information resource.

The free monthly IPMnet NEWS (newsletter) is seen by nearly 5,000 of your colleagues, peers, and contemporaries in 121 countries who are interested in staying current on the topic.

IPMnet and the IPMnet NEWS are dedicated to constructively fostering and improving realistic, practical IPM and environmentally-attuned pest management worldwide.

You are also welcome to access IPMnet's free website with its extensive links to useful IPM information, such as the award-winning(free) DATABASE OF IPM RESOURCES and the acclaimed electronic (free)

RADCLIFFE'S IPM WORLD TEXTBOOK (tambien disponible en Espanol), as well as an expertise database and other services.

This message--while unsolicited--describes IPMnet and its potential usefulness. Of course, for those not interested in, or involved with, integrated (or other) crop pest management, or who face constraints in accessing e-mail and the web, excuse the intrusion. Otherwise, you are

cordially invited to read on

April 2001              IPMnet NEWS              Issue no. 88

The Consortium for International Crop Protection produces and provides IPMnet NEWS as a free, electronic global IPM information resource.

ISSN: 1523-7893

IPMnet is an electronic (only) Integrated Pest Management information source specifically focused on contemporary, economic, environmentally- attuned approaches to managing / controlling weed, pathogen, insect, nematode, and vertebrate pests in crops and amenity plantings.

IPMnet is sponsored by the not-for-profit Consortium for International Crop Protection (CICP), a pioneer in international implementation of environmentally responsible pest management. The Consortium comprises 10 U.S. land grant universities, the Univ. of Puerto Rico, and the U.S.Dept. of Agriculture. Though these institutions are within the extended U.S., IPMnet's charter clearly emphasizes a broad international focus.

IPMnet's purpose is to foster development and appropriate adoption of IPM in the multiple and intertwined interests of mankind.

IPMnet and the electronic newsletter it produces and distributes worldwide--IPMnet NEWS (the masthead above)--offer free service to any interested person, agency, organization, or institution via either or both:

*  automatic direct delivery to an e-mail box each month in ASCII format using DOS; and, on the World Wide Web.

IPMnet NEWS, now in its eighth year of uninterrupted service and with worldwide recognition, is purpose-designed to provide very brief, timely, multi-disciplinary, worldwide "news-you-can-use" (but no adverts) to all concerned with IPM and pest management topics such as:

* development   * field implementation    * research   * extension / adoption     * policy     * impact / socio-economics.

The NEWS strives to alert its readers to new resources, research, extension materials, publications, CDs, videos, trends, problems, solutions, professional opportunities, materials, and equipment. In short, information about any subject that relates to improved, practical, environmentally responsible pest management may be included.

The NEWS aims for a balanced, broad view, but with comity. It shuns finger-pointing, hectoring, or similar uncivilities, roles many other communications and information channels more than adequately fulfill. By contrast, IPMnet strives to present usable, factual, practical information with an eye toward actual on-the-ground implementation.

{However, the NEWS occasionally includes a clearly identified opinion, and is not hesitant to point out shortcomings and glaring biases in materials intended for wide public distribution.}

Since IPM itself is a robust construct that by definition covers all pest management tactics, information about any strategy or tactic, or combinations thereof, may appear in the NEWS.

To IPMnet, the letters I, P, and M embrace concerns about all major groups of crop pests and do not stand for "insect pest management."

IPMnet serves as a major informative and cooperative global communication conduit for IPM / pest management information that cuts across all related disciplines and professions. Participants often help create the substance that has made IPMnet a globally available extensive information resource.

While there are other excellent, electronic periodic information sources that relate to IPM, CICP is not aware of any other comparable, free, broad-scope, regular monthly global IPM/pest management information delivery service Thus, if IPMnet's free information resources could be of service and support for your activities (or those of your colleagues), you are invited to

[1] Subscribe for regular monthly delivery of IPMnet NEWS (files range from 31K to 35K per issue) automatically sent to your e-mail address in ASCII DOS format;

NOTE: beyond Internet access, there is no cost to subscribe

NOTE: the IPMnet NEWS mailing list is privately held, closely secured, not for rent, and firmly restricted to use by just the Consortium (for distribution of IPMnet NEWS).

[2] Request an e-mail "sample copy" of IPMnet NEWS as a quick way to evaluate its content and potential usefulness before making a subscription decision;

[3] Receive information about IPMnet's background, rationale, history, and sponsor; or,        [4] Request IPMnet's World Wide Web free access information, by sending an e-mail message indicating any, or all, of items #1-4 for which you desire a response, along with your preferred e-mail address, to: IPMnet@bcc.orst.edu and IPMnet will respond accordingly.

Whether you subscribe or not, IPMnet NEWS welcomes receiving information about global / local IPM developments. Please forward to  IPMnet@bcc.orst.edu any information you believe would be of interest and use to the expanding worldwide IPM community, such as:

# progress   # new research   # set-backs   # technology (including production, field, and research equipment), and other products related to IPM   # socio-economic aspects of adoption, methods, etc., or,  # open positions and professional opportunities.

IPMnet NEWS makes an effort to acknowledge sources and authors of the materials / items it mentions.

The NEWS also welcomes information about IPM-related PUBLICATIONS, CDs, and VIDEOS as well as EVENTS (symposia, conferences, training courses, etc.). The IPMnet CALENDAR is the most extensive, monthly revised list available anywhere exclusively devoted to global IPM / pest management with up-to-date information for international, regional, and national events.

Each event mentioned includes as much specific information as is known for contacting the organizing or sponsoring organization.

Finally, IPMnet welcomes you to use its services and looks forward to providing useful information in support of your professional or private interests and / or your organization's programs and goals.

Cordially,  --IPMnet Staff
